I refer to ANC signing a “memorandum of understanding” with Putin’s violently homophobic United Russia party and wish to condemn in the strongest possible terms the signing of this pact.
Putin’s party stands for everything that our constitution outright bans: discrimination against people on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity, gender discrimination, control of a free press, the right to a clean environment and much more.
Russia has deteriorated into an autocracy which borders on a dictatorship – and the ANC tacitly condones this by signing any agreement with Putin.
They should instead ask him about the many human rights violations in Russia, for example. state-sanctioned prosecution, assault and even murder of LGBTI people and others, the anti-gay propaganda law and the proposed unthinkable law of taking away children from gay parents.
Is this really the type of people the ANC want to be bed-fellows with?
If so, we as South Africans have a lot to be concerned about.
